Bruce Kilgore, the father of the iconic Air Force 1, had the idea in '84 that the cushioning and impact mitigation technology in athletic shoes could be addressed mechanically. Not by foam material in the midsole, as is customary. After 16 years of development, Eric Avar, the designer of the model, decided to get the new technology out to Nike fans. The team that worked on the Shox studied the aesthetics of the suits in detail to bring it to the model. They succeeded.
